When I was a little girl, boat trips on the sea and visits to the near islands were part of the summer life of my family. I loved the sea and the sunlight glittering on the friendly waves in the northern part of the Gulf of the Bothnia.
Some years ago I came to Norway and thereafter I have become more interested in the world under the waves. Marine mammals are fascinating. The Atlantic Ocean offers incredible variety of whale species. Currently my the sperm whales are my favourites.
Kun olin pieni, veneretket Perämerelle ja lähisaariin olivat tärkeä osa perheeni kesäelämää. Minusta oli ihanaa istua veneessä ja katsella auringon kimallusta aalloilla. Muutettuani muutama vuosi sitten Norjaan olen vähitellen kiinnostunut yhä enemmän aaltojen alapuolella olevasta maailmasta. Merinisäkkäät ovat minusta erityisen kiinnostavia. Atlantin aaltojen alla onkin uskomaton valikoima mitä ihmeellisimpiä otuksia. Nykyisin suosikkini on kaskelotti.
As a Finnish artist I also want to raise awareness of two sympathetic animals of Finnish Archipelago Sea: Baltic Sea porpoise and Baltic ringed seal. Both of them are original species in the rich submarine life of the Finnish Archipelago but now, unfortunately, locally endangered. The populations of Baltic Sea porpoises has declined slowly during a long period as a result of different human operations. The population of Baltic ringed Seals, instead, has declined rapidly because of the climate warming. Several changes are needed to turn undesirable trends and keep the Archipelago Sea full of life.
Valaita on Suomen vesissäkin, tosin vain yhtä lajia. Itämeressä elelee sympaattinen pikkuvalas Itämeren pyöriäinen. Se oli vielä 1900-luvun alussa runsaslukuinen laji, mutta on vähitellen käynyt yhä harvinaisemmaksi. Pahin uhka pyöriäiselle ovat nykyään kalaverkot ja kasvava merenalainen melusaaste.
Itämeren norppa viihtyy vielä Perämerellä, mutta Saaristomerellä ja Suomenlahdella sillä on sama ongelma kuin serkullaan Saimaannorpalla: lämpenevät talvet haittaavat pesimistä.
